The food pyramid and nutritionists and everyone says to eat a healthy serving of grains every day! How can this be? First of all, grains are a processed food. That means your body requires an extra step to metabolize them. This slows your metabolic rate down. It’s like having a password for your phone vs. not having a password-it takes you a little longer to access the content you want*need?*. Secondly, grains are essentially a seed. They are a nutrient dense food. Just like dairy makes baby animals grow quickly, baby plants need a fuel that helps them to grow through their very vulnerable sprout stage quickly. Do you remember growing seeds by folding placing them in a wet paper towel then into a baggy and watching them sprout? Didn’t it seem strange that they were able to grow without any soil or sun? Well, that’s because all the nutrients they need to grow are in their seed. So…when you eat the seed/processed version of the seed, you receive the same nutrient-the nutrients that cause the same kind of anabolic effect that dairy does. Essentially, causing you to grow-but not up!
