Fixating on food is a psychological and emotional disorder. Generally people who fixate on food, have some form of unmet needs that go back to childhood, and instead of dealing with the cause, it has turned into a fixation as an adult.
Children who are not given adequate emotional nurturing (touching, being held, or being told or demonstrated to that they are worthwhile and lovable) will change the original emotion or need to a fixation on food. In order to treat food fixation, it is necessary to revisit the reaction formation that caused the situation in the first place. Again, if your mother was cold, unloving, and concerned more with her career, her friends, her jewelry, anything but her child (you), that need will turn into a fixation on food, a hunger if you will. For a young man, perhaps his father was so busy working, that he didn’t spend time with his child playing ball, sharing time together, or perhaps dad was abusive and hit his child frequently. This fixation on food is painful and causes obesity or at the very least, being overweight, unless the individual has a very high metabolic rate. A good psychotherapist can help an individual overcome this fixation, but it is not an overnight fix. It usually requires months and maybe even years of counseling, but it must be dealt with before starting any weight loss program. Again, your family doctor can refer you to someone who can help you or a family member deal with this problem.
