    A hard stool can not only be uncomfortable, it can also cause damage to the colon. It can be caused by constipation and the use of pain-killing drugs containing opiates. You can get stool softening drugs from your pharmacist over-the-counter, but if this does not relieve the situation, please see your doctor or internist at your earliest convenience. This can be a symptom of something serious.
