The most appropriate time to eat your last meal is 3 or 4 hours before you go to bed. That’s ok if this is 10 pm. If you go to bed at midnight or 1 in the morning, and you are up because you are working late, then go ahead and eat a full meal with a healthy carbohydrate. You wouldn’t stop putting gas in your car during a trip just because it is getting late. If you are still up and working, it is just fine to eat…but choose healthy foods.
If you have a sweet tooth, eat some fruit or make a smoothie or freeze some blended fruit in ice cubes like a popsicle. If you are really hungry, eat a full meal with a yam or potato.
The problem with eating late isn’t eating, it’s what you choose to eat. Weight problems arise when you eat fatty, high sugar, or even excessive amounts of healthy food right before you go to bed. These foods are weight gain foods to begin with and eating them right before your metabolism slows down for the night is a recipe for disaster-no pun intended.
If you are trying to gain weight, meaning you are an ectomorph, eating fatty food late is fine as long as you are weight training fairly heavily 3 or 4 days per week. Be careful that the weight you are gaining is in the form of fat, instead of muscle. If that is the case, then you need to cut your fats back and increase your cardio.
