Stay away from packaged food that has been manufactured and contains anything other then whole ingredients. No chemical additives, salts or flavorings.
When food has a high level of preservatives, it can’t access the nutrients contained therein. For example, an artist decided to purchase a “value meal” from a popular food chain. She let the meat and bun sit out in a moderate environment for 9 months. After 9 months, you would think the food would become moldy and rot, wouldn’t you? Unfortunately, this was not the case at all! The food never looked any different except that it developed a slight shine to it. Almost the way “fake” food might look!
What happened? Why didn’t the food rot and become moldy or at lease, why didn’t ants come to eat it? The answer is in the preservatives. The preservatives prevent food from rotting quickly. The way preservatives preserve food is by making food chemically resistant to the factors that cause food to rot-mainly organics. Flora and fauna (plants and bugs-molds and flies) would normally come along and begin to eat the food that is left out. These organic entities such as mold, eventually take over and completely break down the food. To us this is rotting, to them, it provides nutrition.
However, our digestive system contains similar bacteria that perform the same tasks. Gut bacteria, enzymes, etc. break down the food we eat into the nutrients our bodies utilize to create muscle tissue, mucus, bones, skin, and even energy! These same preservatives that prevent the external bacteria from eating the food also prevent our internal bacteria from being able to extract the nutrients to fully satisfy our bodies! This is why statistics show that while our society is becoming more and more overweight and obese, we are also becoming malnourished!
Think about it this way: Someone hands you a huge stack of money-about 12 inches thick! But when you start counting it, you find that all the bills are $1 and the total amount is about $3,000. If you consider how much money this is by size versus how much of your monthly expenses this pays, it’s really not very much. This is the exact same thing that happens when you eat a meal full of preservatives. The meal takes up a lot of space in your body and puts a lot of calories in…but your body only extracts a small amount of nutrients from it. You can also compare this to taxes.
The best way to extract the nutrients from your food no nourish your body is to consume only whole, unprocessed foods as much as possible.
